Vitran Sells Truckload Unit Frontier Transport

Vitran Corp. said it sold truckload carrier Frontier Transport Corp. to Online Transport, an Indianapolis-based carrier, for about $5 million.

Toronto-based Vitran has focused on its two core segments in the past few years — its less-than-truckload and supply chain units, said CEO Rick Gaetz.

“Frontier, our small owner-operator truckload operation, took a back seat. Therefore, we are extremely pleased with this transaction,” Gaetz said in a statement.

Frontier President Steve Cook will continue to lead the new unit at Online Transport, which bought 794 trailers. Vitran will retain 174 of the newest trailers to be redeployed in its LTL operation.

Vitran said in October its LTL unit had $137.5 million in third-quarter revenue, while its supply chain unit had $19.8 million and truckload had $8.8 million. (Click here for previous story.)

Vitran is ranked No. 35 on the Transport Topics 100 listing of U.S. and Canadian for-hire carriers.
