LAS VEGAS — Volvo Trucks named Erb International and Muñoz Trucking as the 2012 winners of its fourth annual Safety Awards.

Volvo made the announcement late Tuesday at its show floor exhibit floor at American Trucking Associations’ Management Conference & Exhibition here.

The truck maker presented executives from both fleets with $25,000 checks in the amount to use toward their safety programs. Michelin Americas Truck Tires joined Volvo Trucks as a supporting sponsor of the award again this year.

“Volvo is synonymous with safety. It permeates our company culture,” said Magnus Koeck, Volvo Trucks’ vice president of marketing and brand management. “Erb International and Muñoz Trucking have clearly demonstrated the importance of safety within their organizations.

We’re pleased to acknowledge those commitments and how they translate into safe performance on the road.”

The two carriers “both have shown an outstanding commitment to the safety of their employees and others,” said Mike Cain, Michelin’s vice president of original equipment. “We’re pleased to join Volvo Trucks in recognizing both the safety cultures and excellent performance records of these fleets.”

Early this year, Volvo Trucks invited all fleets across the United States and Canada with more than five Class 8 trucks to apply for the annual awards, which are given in two categories: one for fleets with more than 20 million miles of annual operation and the other for companies with less than 20 million miles of operation.

Erb International, New Hamburg, Ontario, won in the more than 20 million miles category while Muñoz Trucking, El Paso, Texas, took the honor in the under 20 million miles category.

Erb International began as a one-man operation in 1959 and now employs more than 1,200 staff and 140 owner-operators across a network of 10 terminals, operates more than 240 trucks and in 2011 had an accident frequency rate of .294 while logging 27,210,747 road miles.

Muñoz Trucking, El Paso, Texas, began in 1989 as a dry-van hauler and today provides a range of transportation and warehousing services throughout North America. With a fleet of 79 trucks, Muñoz had no recordable accidents in 2011 in more than 10 million miles of operation.
