AMPA, Fla. — Volvo Trucks North America said it would add a $7,500 technology “surcharge” to all its trucks sold in 2007, to offset the cost of meeting new emission standards that take effect Jan. 1.

VTNA said Feb. 13 that the 2007 engine surcharge would cover Volvo’s new 11-, 13- and 16-liter engines developed for 2007, the optional 15-liter ISX engine from Cummins Inc. and the diesel particulate filters all 2007 engines need.

Scott Kress, VTNA’s senior vice president of sales and marketing, said Volvo “has made a very substantial investment in developing not just engines, but complete vehicle solutions to meet the 2007 standard. . . . That technology has tons of costs behind it.”
