Volvo Trucks Says 2014 Engines Will Be More Fuel Efficient

Volvo Trucks said it has increased fuel efficiency for its model year 2014 engines by up to 2% using new components.

Volvo trucks equipped with a 2014 D11, D13 or D16 engine will have increased fuel efficiency of 0.5% to 2%.

The truck maker said the 2014 engines have a redesigned piston and liner with smoother surfaces, a clutched air compressor, which disengages the clutch from the engine, and a new seven-hole injector.

The injector has better fuel atomization for a more even distribution of fuel within the cylinder, according to Volvo Trucks.

The engines have a new crankcase ventilation system that filters more oil from blow-by gasses before they leave the engine, improving engine backpressure, the company announced in a statement.

“Volvo trucks equipped with 2014 engine technology will deliver substantial fuel efficiency benefits, while also providing the power and performance customers expect from a Volvo powertrain,” said Göran Nyberg, president of Volvo Trucks North American Sales & Marketing.
