Intermodal rail traffic rose 18.6% last week, the Association of American Railroads said Thursday.
Traffic for the week ended Saturday rose to 231,208 trailers and containers, which was 0.2% lower than the comparable week in 2008.
Containers rose 19.8% to 196,567 units, while trailers gained 12% to 34,641, AAR said in its weekly report.
U.S. railroads originated 284,507 carloads for the week, up 3.5% from the same week last year.
Intermodal traffic was up 17.3% for the month of July from a year ago and down 5.1% from two years ago, AAR said in separate report.
Carloads for the month improved 4.1% from last year and were 14.6% below the July 2008 level.
