Werner Enterprises CEO Greg Werner has stepped down, and its board of directors has elected company founder Clarence “C.L.” Werner to replace his son in that position.

The company said as it develops a management team, Greg Werner decided this was the time to retire as CEO.

The news comes just two weeks after C.L. Werner was re-elected chairman when another son, Gary Werner, stepped down from the position to spend more time with his family, according to the company.

Greg Werner was CEO since 2007 and will remain on the board of directors. Werner said C.L. Werner “plans to groom existing president and Chief Operating Officer Derek Leathers for an even larger role in the company.”

Greg Werner started in the business with mechanical work in the shop as a teenager. Over the next 40 years, he advanced through a variety of positions, from dispatcher to vice president of IT to president, and ultimately CEO.

Werner Enterprises ranks No. 16 on the Transport Topics Top 100 list of the largest U.S. and Canadian for-hire carriers.
