Werner Enterprises said its fourth-quarter net income fell 12% from a year ago because of softer freight demand.
Net income declined to $26 million, or 35 cents per share, from $29.3 million, or 40 cents, a year ago.
Revenue was little changed at $509.7 million, the truckload carrier said.
The downturn resulted from the “sluggish freight trend experienced in the latter half of third-quarter 2012,” Werner said.
Werner’s “customers generally chose to keep their inventory levels leaner in a market with economic and political uncertainty,” the carrier said.
Werner Enterprises is ranked No. 11 on the Transport Topics 100 listing of U.S. and Canadian for-hire carriers.
