Truckload carrier Werner Enterprises said Thursday its third-quarter net income rose to $22.4 million, or 31 cents a share, from $21.9 million, or 30 cents, last year.

Revenue rose 14% to $584.1 million, the company said in a statement.

Werner said its average monthly miles per tractor increased by 350 miles, a gain of 3.5%, and that it lowered the average percentage of its empty miles by 50 basis points.

The carrier said it had taken a number of measures to improve its fleet’s fuel efficiency, and that as of the end of the quarter it had installed auxiliary power units in about 40% of its company-owned fleet.

Werner is ranked No. 13 on the Transport Topics 100 listing of U.S. and Canadian for-hire carriers.
