Xtra Lease to Add 9,000 New Trailers This Year
Xtra Lease has ordered about 9,000 new trailers to add to its lease and rental fleet this year.
The company said it is purchasing a mix of dry vans, liftgated vans, refrigerated vans, flatbeds and chassis. New trailers will arrive at each of the company’s 53 rental locations throughout the year.
All of the 53-foot vans and reefers will be outfitted with aerodynamic side skirts, low-rolling-resistance tires and trailer-tracking units to help fleets improve utilization and reduce fuel costs, Xtra Lease said.
“While capacity remains tight, driven largely by today’s driver shortage, we’re continuing to invest in new trailers to provide fleets options for acquiring equipment,” CEO Bill Franz said. “Our specs include the latest technology to help save fuel, provide protection against costly damages and prevent maintenance downtime.”
The new dry vans will feature galvanized rear-door frames, rear bumpers and landing gear bracing and wing plates, Xtra Lease said. Some units also will receive galvanized landing-gear legs.
Xtra Lease said nearly half of its fleet of about 80,000 trailers is no more than five years old. The St. Louis-based company said it has added more than 35,000 trailers equipped with aerodynamic side skirts and low-rolling-resistance tires since 2010.
