Yellow Reinstates Fuel Surcharge

Yellow Freight System, one of the nation's largest general freight carriers, said it will reinstate its diesel fuel surcharge July 14 to offset rising fuel prices.

A surcharge ranging from 0.5% to 3% will apply as long as the U.S. national average diesel fuel price is above $1.10 a gallon.

Yellow Freight suspended its fuel surcharge program in January 1998, when average diesel fuel prices fell below $1.10 a gallon.

Diesel fuel prices have risen 5.2% during the past six weeks, hitting $1.11 a gallon on July 12, according to a Department of Energy survey of 350 diesel service centers. That compares with an average of $1.06 a gallon on June 7.

Yellow Freight of Overland Park, Kan., said the surcharge will be adjusted on Wednesday of each week based on the DOE national average price.
