The U.S. National Transportation Safety Board is “going to have to let some things go,” if budget cuts are not restored, Chairman Deborah Hersman told Bloomberg Television.

The federal agency responsible for investigating transportation accidents is pushing to have some of the same safety standards required for tractor-trailers established for smaller trucks.

The National Transportation Safety Board wants trucking companies to gather 10 years of driving records for newly hired drivers — an increase from the current three years that the board said does not allow carriers to make informed hiring decisions.

Deborah Hersman was sworn in for her second two-year term as National Transportation Safety Board chairman.

President Obama said he plans to re-nominate Deborah Hersman to a two-year term chairing the National Transportation Safety Board.
