The freight market didn’t change much starting the new year with tonnage remaining sequentially the same for January, American Trucking Associations reported.

The freight market finished the year on a downward slope as tonnage declined on both a monthly and annual basis in December, American Trucking Associations reported.

The ATA For-Hire Truck Tonnage Index decreased 1.8% to 112.5 in November from 114.6 in October. The index is down 1% compared with November 2023.

Truck tonnage in August surged 7.4% when measured against the same month a year ago, and on a sequential basis it rose 2.8% from July, according to American Trucking Associations.

Truck tonnage in February increased 2.4% compared with the same month a year ago, and American Trucking Associations’ advanced seasonally adjusted For-Hire Truck Index equaled 115.3, the federation announced March 22.

Truck tonnage in January rose 1.2% when measured against year-ago levels, marking the fifth consecutive month for a year-over-year increase, American Trucking Associations said.

Truck tonnage in June inched up 0.5% compared with year-ago levels, a slowdown compared with recent months amid a tempering of freight activity nationwide, according to American Trucking Associations’ For-Hire Truck Tonnage Index.

Truck tonnage for 2019 increased 3.3%, softer than year-ago levels but continuing a streak of annual gains, American Trucking Associations announced Jan. 21.

Truck tonnage for the month of September rose 3.5% compared with year-ago levels, and inched up on a sequential basis over August 2019, according to American Trucking Associations' For-Hire Truck Tonnage Index.

American Trucking Associations’ advanced seasonally adjusted For-Hire Truck Tonnage Index increased to 118.9 in November from 118.4 in October, a 0.4% gain.
