Sharply higher rail rates for carrying hazardous materials known as toxic inhalants have led some shippers to shift to trucks, said John Conley, president of the National Tank Truck Carriers.

The International Longshore and Warehouse Union and the Pacific Maritime Association have reached a tentative agreement on a new six-year labor contract that will cover more than 25,000 workers at 29 West Coast ports, the groups said Tuesday in a joint statement.

Transportation and third-party logistics firm C.H. Robinson Worldwide said its second-quarter profit rose to $90.4 million, or 52 cents a share, from $82.3 million, or 47 cents, a year ago.
