CSX Transportation and the District of Columbia filed a motion in federal court last week saying they plan to end their litigation over an attempt by the city to ban hazardous materials shipments.

SmartTruck, a company founded by aerospace engineers, has received approval from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency for trailer attachments that it said could improve over-the-road fuel efficiency by up to  11% and that it soon would begin manufacturing them.

Harbor commissioners at the Port of Los Angeles late last week approved a proposal that will allow drayage operators — who were provided millions of dollars for the purchase of newer, cleaner trucks — to cut in half a requirement that they make a minimum of 300 annual trips to the port.

ARLINGTON, Va. — Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood said the Obama administration is spending money on freight rail projects to bolster its push for high-speed intercity passenger rail.

Schneider National Inc., the nation’s largest privately held truckload carrier, said that it plans to hire 2,000 more drivers this year — one of the most aggressive hiring drives in its 75-year history and an expansion that by itself would place the company among the 100 largest for-hire trucking fleets.
