The national average price of regular gasoline plunged 53 in the two weeks ended Friday to $2.78 a gallon, according to the latest Lundberg Survey of filling stations released Sunday.

The national average price of diesel fuel fell another 17.7 cents to $3.482 a gallon last week, the lowest level since mid-February, the Department of Energy reported.

Existing homes sales jumped 5.5% in September to the highest level in a year, the National Association of Realtors said Friday.

Union Pacific Corp. said Thursday its third-quarter profit rose 32% to $703 million, or $1.38 per share, from $532 million, or $1.00 per share, last year.

Norfolk Southern Corp.’s third-quarter profit jumped 35%, the railroad said late Tuesday.

Transportation and third-party logistics firm C.H. Robinson Worldwide said its third-quarter profit rose to $93.6 million, or 54 cents a share, from $83.7 million, or 48 cents, a year ago.

Canadian National Railway, Canada’s largest railroad, said its net income rose 14% to C$552 million in the third quarter, or C$1.16 a share, from C$485 million, or 96 cents, a year ago.

The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration soon will introduce a program that will list certified medical examiners on a national registry and require all interstate commercial truck drivers to obtain their medical certification from an approved examiner.

Greatwide Logistics Services, a provider of non-asset-based transportation and third-party logistics services, said it will be acquired by a private investor group.
