XPO Logistics Inc. posted its first-ever profit, earning $42.6 million, or 35 cents per share, as results improved in the less-than-truckload and last-mile services as well as European logistics activity.

HAMPTON ROADS, Va. — The Port of Virginia is expanding within the next five years in an effort to attract larger vessels traveling through the Panama Canal, according to a presentation during an Aug. 3 sightseeing visit for Congressional staffers and the media.

Deutsche Post AG’s quarterly profit jumped at the fastest pace in 4 1/2 years after prices increased and deliveries on behalf of internet-based retailers rose. The stock gained to an eight-month high.

Intermodal freight shipments fell 6.1% in the second quarter, ending 25 consecutive year-over-year increases, hurt by fewer international and trailer shipments, the Intermodal Association of North America reported.

Logistics provider Expeditors International of Washington reported second-quarter profits fell 1.5% compared to the same period last year due to lower yields from airfreight and ocean freight operations.

Weaker energy-related freight shipments led two more North American railroads to report lower second-quarter earnings, including a decline of 6% at Norfolk Southern Corp. and 3% at Canadian National Railway.
