U.S. rail intermodal traffic increased 7.6% in the week ended April 19 compared with the same week last year, the Association of American Railroads reported.

Norfolk Southern Corp. said its first-quarter profit declined and operating revenue dropped 2%.

Canada’s two major freight railroads reported higher first-quarter earnings from a year ago despite harsh winter conditions.

Hub Group Inc. said its first-quarter profit slipped from a year ago, citing “extreme weather in many markets,” although its revenue improved.

U.S. rail intermodal traffic increased 9.3% in the week ended April 12 compared with the same week last year, the Association of American Railroads reported.

Union Pacific Corp.’s first-quarter earnings jumped 14% to $1.1 billion, or $2.38 a share, the company reported April 17. Revenue rose 6.6% to $5.64 billion.

CSX Corp. reported its first-quarter net income fell 14% to $398 million, or 40 cents per share, as the rail industry began its first-quarter round of earnings reports on a lower note.
