AN ANTONIO — Over the next 12 months, American Trucking Associations wants to expand its Highway Watch program to all 50 states, train 300,000 more drivers and recruit security personnel from 3,000 transportation firms to create an emergency communications network to help public officials respond to terrorist attacks and other emergency situations, association officials said.

All the association needs to turn the plan into reality is money from the federal government, said Jack Legler, ATA’s director of trucking security and operations.

ATA is awaiting word from the Transportation Security Administration on a request for $42 million over the next budget year to fund expansion of the Highway Watch program, Legler said at the ATA Management Conference & Exhibition on Oct. 20.
