OSTON — After a year of study and debate, American Trucking Associations said its Board of Directors unanimously voted to back the use of electronic onboard recorders for monitoring drivers’ hours of service.
“We feel that this is among the most proactive and important decisions that our industry can make to promote safety and ensure hours-of-service compliance,” ATA President Bill Graves said.
“As this issue is studied by [the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration], we feel that the policy guidance offered by ATA represents a common-sense ap-proach to a complicated issue.”
The Oct. 18 decision here at ATA’s annual Management Conference & Exhibition was the organization’s first official position on recorder usage. An FMCSA official said the agency would publish a rule early in 2006, but had not decided definitely to require EOBRs.
