AMPA, Fla. — American Trucking Associations’ board of directors endorsed a new truck size and weight policy that backs larger and heavier commercial vehicles, a move association officials said was a first step toward getting the federal limits changed.

The decision to seek federal legislation allowing heavier and longer trailers or combinations marked a departure from ATA’s previous course on size and weight, which President Bill Graves described as “benign neglect.”

In 2003, ATA reached an agreement with the Association of American Railroads not to seek increased size and weight limits in legislation reauthorizing federal transportation spending. AAR agreed to stop supporting legislation to ban double and triple trailers. (Click here for previous coverage.)
