American Trucking Associations' latest U.S. Freight Transportation Forecast projects a 35% rise in total freight tonnage between 2016 and 2027.
The report, released last week, also estimated a 27% rise in truck freight over the period, including 2% annually between 2016 and 2022 in the truckload sector and faster increases in less-than-truckload. Trucks, rail and water modes are expected to lose market share to pipelines as U.S. energy production grows.
“As we continue to see growth in the overall economy, particularly due to manufacturing, consumer spending and international trade, we will also see increases in the amount of freight moved in America’s trucks,” ATA Chief Economist Bob Costello said.
“No one can know exactly what the future holds for our economy and industry, but Freight Forecast has proved to be a valuable tool for everyone from industry leaders to government policymakers,” ATA President Chris Spear said.
