merican Trucking Associations has named Curtis Whalen, a former transportation and energy lobbyist and Capitol Hill staff member, to serve as executive director of a newly reconstituted Intermodal Motor Carriers Conference.

The conference, which will hold its first educational workshop in Chicago, Dec. 8-9, was re-established by ATA at its Management Conference & Exhibition in Las Vegas in October in an effort to expand representation of one of the fastest-growing sectors in the transportation industry, ATA officials said.

Whalen, in an interview, said his goal was to bring together the intermodal trucking community to address security issues that threaten to slow the process of moving freight to and from the nation’s ports and rail terminals.

“It’s a complex logistics situation,” Whalen said. “How do we ensure that we can move more goods and do it safely?”
