ATA Plans to Build Case Against Sleeper-Berth Provision

OSTON — American Trucking Associations’ leaders sanctioned plans to collect and submit data on the effects of the new hours-of-service rules — particularly the sleeper-berth provision — to the federal government, with an eye on getting the rule changed.

At the same time, ATA’s board of directors voted, by a large margin, against suing the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration to reverse changes in the sleeper-berth provision of the rules that were announced in August.

The board’s action prompted a top official of the California Trucking Association to say the state group would file its own suit to change the rule.
