ATA Wants Congress to Solve Problems With Driver Hazmat Checks

HICAGO — An American Trucking Associations executive said ATA was now seeking a legislative solution to problems with a federal program requiring fingerprint-based background checks for hazardous materials drivers.

Also last week, a trucking executive told a congressional panel the program was limiting the industry’s ability to haul hazmat.

After working “without much success” with the Transportation Security Administration to alter the background-check program, Richard Moskowitz, ATA regulatory counsel, said the association was “now switching gears and focusing on a legislative solution.”
