Duana AckliePresident Bush announced July 29 that he would appoint Duane Acklie, chairman of truckload hauler Crete Carrier Corp. in Lincoln, Neb., to be board chairman of the Student Loan Marketing Association.

A lawyer with interests in banking and real estate, in addition to trucking, Acklie said he would take the place of Colin McMillan, whom Bush had nominated to be Secretary of the Navy but recently died.

“I’ve always been involved in banking and I’m interested in education,” Acklie said in a July 29 telephone interview. “Student loans have done for this country what the G.I. Bill did for soldiers returning after World War II.”

SLMA, commonly called Sallie Mae, is a government-backed enterprise that buys and resells a large portfolio of federally guaranteed and private student loans.
