CARB to Consider Retrofits for 1993-98 Truck Engines

he state agency that regulates air quality in California planned a public hearing Oct. 23 to consider requiring that all heavy-duty truck engines built between 1993 and 1998 include computer software to reduce nitrogen oxides emissions, even if the trucks are not registered in the state.

The California Air Resources Board estimated the rule would affect 100,000 in-state heavy-duty trucks, school buses and motor homes — and said it believed it would affect 300,000 to 400,000 more vehicles that travel in California.

But Stephanie Williams, vice president of the California Trucking Association, said she did not believe the rule could affect trucks not registered in the state.
