Cargo Transporters likes collision-warning systems well enough to equip 100 of its new trucks with the devices, which operate on the same principal as radar.

The system will warn company drivers when they get too close to other vehicles or objects in the blind spots around a tractor.

The fleet of the carrier, based in Claremont, N.C., will have EVT-300 collision warning systems installed on recently ordered Freightliners. The systems were manufactured by Eaton Vorad Technologies.

“After trying the earlier EVT-200 systems, we became convinced that collision warning systems provide an indisputable enhancement to safety,” said John Pope, vice president of the 240-vehicle trucking company. “We’ve received feedback from several drivers who avoided accidents because of the systems, especially while driving in rain and fog.”

In the near future, the units will include a feature tied directly to cruise control that will slow the truck down if it gets too close to a vehicle in front of it, said Eaton Vorad president Chris Royan
