AS VEGAS — Joseph Chapman, operations manger of truckload carrier Triple S Trucking, said a $16,900 investment earlier this year in more fuel-efficient equipment would turn into more than $77,300 in savings by the end of 2005.

Chapman was one of a number of carriers and shippers who said the Environmental Protection Agency’s recently launched “SmartWay Transport Partnership” was already improving their bottom lines, and at the same time cutting greenhouse gas emissions.

They spoke at a panel discussion Oct. 4 during American Trucking Associations’ Management Conference & Exhibition here.

“This is an opportunity for shippers and carriers to demonstrate their roles as environmental stewards, and show the public and private sector can provide environmental benefits better than government regulations,” said Glen Kedzie, ATA regulatory counsel.
