Changes at DHS Seen as Beneficial to Trucking Industry

rucking industry officials told Transport Topics they hoped recently announced changes at the Department of Homeland Security would improve coordination on freight and trucking security issues.

The changes, announced July 13 by Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff, included shifting responsibility for agencies such as the Transportation Security Administration and Customs and Border Protection directly to the secretary’s office, which industry officials said should help clarify security policies.

“The directorate for border and transportation security is basically eliminated as a layer that the agencies were under and now they report to the front office,” said Martin Rojas, executive director of safety, security and operations for American Trucking Associations.
