Con-way Freight, the nation’s third-largest less-than-truckload carrier, said Wednesday it is abandoning the business model it has used since its founding in 1983 and reorganizing itself as a single, nationwide operating company.

Its traditional regional Con-way Central, Southern and Western operating companies will be folded into one carrier with headquarters in Ann Arbor, Mich. Con-way Freight is the largest part of Con-way Inc.

“This transformation will improve Con-way Freight’s performance by enabling us to anticipate and respond to customer needs more quickly and intelligently,” said Con-way Freight President John Labrie in announcing the change.

Labrie added that the company’s average length of haul has increased substantially this decade and the company is now doing more interregional and longhaul work than it did when it was founded.

Con-way Inc. is ranked No. 6 on the on the 2007 Transport Topics 100 listing of U.S. and Canadian for-hire carriers.
