on-Way Transportation Services said it would encourage all its 13,000 drivers to participate in American Trucking Associations’ Highway Watch program, in what ATA said was the first corporate-wide effort by a national trucking company.

“It’s not enough that the trucking industry only deliver freight on time anymore,” said Gerald Detter, president of the less-than-truckload carrier in Ann Arbor, Mich.

“We now have an important duty to take a leadership position in helping provide security on America’s highways, while still promoting safety as we always have,” Detter said. “Con-Way drivers will do their part whenever possible.”

ATA launched Highway Watch in 1998 as a joint safety initiative with the Federal Highway Administration and state trucking associations.
