Workers at two of three Con-way Freight terminals in Southern California voted against joining the Teamsters union, while a third, in Los Angeles, voted narrowly in favor of representation, the company said.

In addition to Los Angeles, the Oct. 23 votes were taken at Con-way Freight’s Santa Fe Springs and San Fernando Valley terminals.

“We were gratified that our employees in [the two locations], after hearing all the facts, chose to maintain their union-free status and voted to reject the union,” Con-way Freight President Greg Lehmkuhl said.

“We continue to believe that our company can best meet the needs of our employees by maintaining an open, respectful and direct relationship with our employees, without the interference of a union,” he said in a statement.

The vote counts were not available, and Southern California union officials from the Teamsters Joint Council 42 could not be reached for comment Oct. 24.

Workers at Con-way’s Laredo, Texas, terminal last month became the company’s first to vote to join the Teamsters.

Con-way Freight is the third-largest U.S. less-than-truckload carrier, behind FedEx Freight and YRC Worldwide. It is part of Con-way Inc., which ranks No. 4 on the Transport Topics Top 100 list of U.S. and Canadian for-hire carriers.
