Cutting Cargo Theft Could Help Hobble Terrorism, Fla. Authorities Say

ome law enforcement officials in Florida have launch-ed an offensive against cargo theft and hope that federal authorities and those in other states would join them.

Law enforcement personnel said cargo theft should be seen not just as an ordinary crime, but also as a way to finance terrorism. In central Florida, Marion County Sheriff Ed Dean organized a cargo security legislative summit at Tallahassee, Fla., last year to discuss ways to crack down on cargo thieves.
