Diesel fell for a fourth week, dipping 0.8 cent to $3.841 a gallon, the lowest price since July, while gasoline fell for the first time in three weeks, the Department of Energy said Monday.

Trucking’s main fuel has dropped almost a nickel — 4.9 cents — in the past month of downturns.

Gasoline fell 2.9 cents to $3.626 a gallon, marking just its second decline in the past seven weeks, DOE said following its weekly survey of filling stations.

That was the motor fuel’s biggest drop since it fell 6.6 cents two months ago on April 15, according to DOE figures.

Monday’s dip leaves diesel 11.2 cents over the same week last year, and the price is the lowest since it was $3.796 on July 30.

Gasoline is now 9.3 cents higher than the same week last year.

Oil slipped slightly on Monday, falling 8 cents to $97.77 a barrel on the New York Mercantile Exchange, Bloomberg News reported.

Friday’s $97.85 Nymex closing price was the highest since Jan. 30, which in turn had been the highest since mid-September, according to Bloomberg figures.

Each week, DOE surveys about 400 diesel filling stations and 800 gasoline stations to compile national average prices.
