Diesel declined for the first time in four weeks, dipping 1.2 cents to $3.937 a gallon, while gasoline rose for a fifth straight week, the Department of Energy said.

The diesel downturn left trucking’s main fuel $1.009 over the same week last year, DOE said following its weekly survey of filling stations.

Gasoline rose 1.2 cents to $3.711 a gallon, DOE said. Gas has gained 13.7 cents in the past five weeks and is now 97.6 cents over the same week a year ago.

Diesel is now 18.7 cents below the year’s high of $4.124 set May 2, which was the highest national average in more than two-and-a-half years.

Diesel has remained below the $4 mark since May 23.

Each week, DOE surveys about 350 diesel filling stations to compile a national snapshot average price.
