Diesel fuel’s national average price fell 2.2 cents to $2.246 a gallon, the lowest in more than three and a half years, the Department of Energy said Monday.
The downturn left the price $1.034 less than the same week last year, DOE said following its weekly survey of filling stations.
The price was the lowest since June 6, 2005, when trucking’s main fuel was $2.234, according to DOE records.
Gasoline, meanwhile, jumped 5.4 cents to $1.892, the highest since Nov. 24, when it was at the same level.
Gas — which has risen 27.9 cents from an almost five-year low of $1.613 set five weeks ago — is $1.086 less than the same week a year ago.
Each week, DOE surveys about 350 diesel filling stations to compile a national snapshot average price.
