Diesel Price Dips 0.7¢; Gas Falls 4¢
Diesel fuel’s price decreased 0.7 cent to $3.974 a gallon, the first decrease in a month, while gasoline dropped 4 cents to $3.547, the Department of Energy reported Sept. 16.
The diesel decline followed a week in which the price didn’t change, preceded by a cumulative gain of 8.5 cents in three increases in a row.
Trucking’s main fuel is now 16.1 cents below the same week last year, DOE said following its weekly survey of filling stations. Gas is 33.1 cents below a year ago.
Diesel has risen in seven of the past 10 weeks, leaving it 15.7 cents higher than it was in early July, according to DOE figures. Last week’s price was the highest since April 1.
Crude oil fell to its lowest price in three weeks on the New York Mercantile Exchange Sept. 16. Futures settled at $106.59, a 1.5% decrease from the previous trading day, amid a deal reached Sept. 14 between the United States and Russia that could eliminate Syria’s chemical weapons and avoid a military strike in the Middle East, Bloomberg News reported.
Each week, DOE surveys about 400 diesel filling stations and 800 gasoline stations to compile national average prices.
