The U.S. average retail price of diesel fuel rose 2.1 cents to $2.868 a gallon from a week ago, the Department of Energy reported Monday.

The increase left the price 16.5 cents below the same week last year, according to DOE figures.

Last week’s 5.1-cent decline was the biggest since January.

Gasoline, meanwhile, rose 1.4 cents to $2.785 a gallon, the first increase in five weeks and just the third in the past 13 weeks, DOE figures showed.

Gas has fairly steadily come down from its record price of $3.218, set on May 21.

Diesel has risen in five of the past 10 weeks and is just 3 cents off the year’s high of $2.898, set two weeks ago.

Diesel is now 45.5 cents higher than the year’s low price of $2.413, set on Jan. 29.

Each week, DOE surveys about 350 diesel filling stations to compile a national snapshot average price.
