The average national retail price of diesel climbed 3 cents to $2.893 a gallon, the Department of Energy Department said Tuesday.
The price left trucking’s main fuel 7.4 cents below the same week last year, DOE said following its weekly survey of filling stations, released on Tuesday because of Labor Day on Monday.
Meanwhile, gasoline jumped 4.7 cents to an average $2.796 a gallon, turning around a trend for most of the past three months.
Gas had fallen in 11 of the previous 14 weeks, with a trending decline from its all-time record high of $3.218, set on May 21, DOE figures showed.
Crude oil futures closed at more than $75 a barrel for the first time in a month Tuesday on speculation that oil and gasoline supplies declined last week and signs that OPEC countries will not boost output, Bloomberg reported.
Oil rose $1.04 to close the trading day at $75.08 a barrel on the New York Mercantile Exchange, the highest close since Aug. 3, Bloomberg said. Prices are 8.5% higher than a year ago.
Each week, DOE surveys about 350 diesel filling stations to compile a national snapshot average price.
