YOUNTVILLE, Calif.  An executive with Daimler Trucks North America said the company does not plan to participate in the industrywide fuel-economy challenge issued by Navistar Inc. earlier this month.

“Testing grounds and provings grounds are great for specific testing of vehicles — for specific performance attributes — but it does not represent the real conditions our trucks run in with our customers,” Diane Hames, DTNA’s general manager of sales and marketing, said here July 27.

DTNA is the parent company of Freightliner and Western Star trucks. Hames said Freightliner’s leading market share, along with strong orders this summer, show that “customers have spoken for us.”

Navistar announced it had invited the other Class 8 truck manufacturers to the company’s new proving grounds in New Carlisle, Indiana, during the week of Aug. 31.
