EMA Pushes Fuel Refiners to Boost Cetane in Diesel

he Engine Manufacturers Association said it would push diesel refiners to raise cetane standards in diesel fuel, while refiners said making such fuel would raise costs.

A higher cetane rating means the fuel has “better ignition and burning properties,” said Alan Schaeffer, executive director of the Diesel Technology Forum.

EMA recommended that the American Society for Testing and Materials — the organization that sets the cetane standard — raise diesel fuel to a 43-cetane minimum from the current 40.
