he Environmental Protection Agency may delay an August deadline for trucking companies to detail how they plan to contain oil spills on their property, David Evans, the head of the agency’s oil program, said last week.

EPA has not yet decided for certain whether to extend the deadline, Evans told Transport Topics April 6, but “we are not going to put facilities in an untenable position [if there is] insufficient time to comply” with the agency’s Aug. 17 deadline for companies to have a revised oil-spill containment plan.

EPA has been under pressure from the oil industry and Congress to grant an extension.

Sen. James Inhofe (R-Okla.), chairman of the Senate Environment and Public Works Committee, has written the agency seeking an extension, as have several industry associations.
