Execs Back Legislation to Check Drivers Hauling Dangerous Goods

rucking industry groups said they would support new legislation focusing federal efforts on checking the backgrounds of drivers who haul “security-sensitive” material, provided it replaces the current system.

Testifying on behalf of American Trucking Associations, David McClimon, president of Con-way Freight, told a panel of the House Homeland Security Committee June 15 that the association believes the bill embodies “a common sense, risk-based approach to the threats posed by the transportation of certain materials.”

Though ATA was “encouraged by the introduction of the SAFE Truckers Act,” he said the legislation needed some improvements.
