FedEx Express to Test Electric Cargo Truck in D.C.
FedEx Express said it will begin testing a 100% electric vehicle under real conditions in Washington, D.C.
The company said it will be testing a Nissan e-NV200 that was tested with fleets in Singapore, the United Kingdom and Brazil.
The Nissan e-NV200 will be subject to a routine delivery schedule for about six weeks to determine the viability of using an electric vehicle as well as refine it for mass production, scheduled to begin in Europe later this year.
“As a global fleet operator serving 220 countries and territories worldwide, FedEx is committed to improving the efficiency of its vehicles as part of our EarthSmart initiatives,” Mitch Jackson, vice president of Environmental Affairs and Sustainability, said in a statement.”
The all-electric cargo vehicle is based on the Nissan Leaf powertrain and lithium-ion battery. It can be charged up to 80% of its full capacity in less than 30 minutes, FedEx said.
FedEx Express has 167 electric vehicles and 365 hybrid electric vehicles in the United States, France, Germany, Italy, Japan and China.
