Fleets Say RFID Tags Possible
adio frequency identification tags are likely to become commonplace on trucks and could replace the traditional fuel card in the coming years, as carriers seek faster ways to complete their transactions at truck stops, according to industry and fuel card executives.
Randy Workman, vice president of administration at truckload carrier TMT Inc., said that if trucks were equipped with external RFID tags, the truck’s information could be read electronically by a computer installed on a fuel pump, rather than the driver having to go into a travel plaza to pay for a purchase.
Once the fuel pump’s computer reads the RFID tag, it could then complete the purchase and send this data back to fuel card issuers and trucking companies, Workman said.
