FMCSA Aims to Create Doctor Registry

Plan Would Link Drivers’ Medical Data to CDL

RLINGTON, Va. — The head of the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration said the agency would propose a rule in 2006 to electronically link a truck driver’s medical certificate to the state-issued commercial driver license.

FMCSA also would establish a national registry of certified medical examiners by 2009, said Annette Sandberg, the agency’s administrator, during a public meeting here last week.

These examiners, including doctors, physicians’ assistants and chiropractors, would have to meet a series of qualifications in order to examine drivers.
