Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration official said untethered trailer tracking systems can reduce cargo theft, lessen the chance of terrorist attack and track detention charges more accurately.

Amy Houser, an engineer in the agency’s Office of Research and Technology, said the agency completed a pilot project in October that used door and cargo sensors, as well as global positioning systems, to track 75 trailers for three months.

The project showed untethered trailer tracking was most helpful in reducing cargo theft, Houser said recently during the National Safety Council’s International Truck and Bus Safety and Security Symposium.
