AIKOLOA, Hawaii — Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration Administrator Annette Sandberg said her agency would take steps to improve the quality of data used to target motor carriers for safety reviews.

Sandberg said officials are “revalidating” the model used to construct safety scores that are posted on the federal Safestat Web site. The scores are calculated based on a combination of accident reports, roadside inspection results and on-site compliance reviews.

A recent report by the Transportation Department’s Inspector General said data used to compile Safestat scores were, in many cases, incomplete and inaccurate and should not be used except internally to target unsafe carriers.

Speaking at the Truckload Carriers Association annual convention here March 15, Sandberg said officials are looking at all information to determine “if it serves a public purpose.”
