FMCSA Proposes Revisions To Cargo-Securement Rule

he Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration has proposed revising its rules that govern how cargo is secured on flatbed trailers.

The regulations, which went into effect in January 2004, cover how carriers must tie down or secure materials such as lumber, metal and automobiles.

FMCSA’s revision includes clarifying performance standards for flatbed-securement equipment and how that equipment should be attached to a trailer.



American Trucking Associations had petitioned for changes to the rule earlier this year because there were “a number of ambiguities in it,” said David Nguyen, ATA’s automotive engineer.

In its June 8 Federal Register notice, FMCSA said final comments on the proposed changes were due by Aug. 8.
