FMCSA’s New Deputy Head ‘Receptive’ to Groups’ Views

avid Hugel, the new deputy administrator of the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration, said he would be receptive to hearing from all interested parties on various regulations, including an upcoming rule governing the use of electronic monitors for driver hours of service.

Although Hugel did not comment on the details of any specific rules in an interview with Transport Topics last week, he did indicate he supported the expanded use of such electronic onboard recorders.

“I’m fully in favor of using technology where it’s available and where it’s been proven,” he said, adding that technology “can take the subjectivity out of enforcement.”



He said FMCSA’s long-awaited regulation on EOBRs was “in the rulemaking process.”
